Saving rocket, adding judges among Huntsville area’s legislative highlights

The 2023 Alabama Legislative session receives a passing grade from three of the state senators who represent Madison, Limestone and Morgan counties.

But at least a couple of the senators, Huntsville’s Sam Givhan and Decatur’s Arthur Orr, believe it could have gone better in some areas.

“I think we had a good session,” said Givhan, who represents District 7, which is entirely in Madison County. “As always it is a matter of perspective.”

He was particularly pleased a bill he sponsored – Senate Bill 39 – passed. It will add circuit and district judges in Madison County and provide additional judges in other parts of the state with an increasing court case load.

Givhan also cites successfully working with local State Reps. Anthony Daniels and Rex Reynolds on bills they sponsored. Daniels – who serves as minority leader – sponsored a bill that would exempt overtime pay from state taxes. Reynolds sponsored a bill that would allow retired officers to serve as school resource officers.
